Implant Disease & Treatment
Just like your natural teeth, dental implants are susceptible to diseases that need to be addressed. At Green Bay Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, we employ the latest technology and techniques to help keep your implants healthy and in your mouth! There are 2 main diseases that affect dental implants:
Peri-Implant Mucositis
Have you noticed bleeding around your implant during brushing or flossing? This could be a sign of a condition called Peri-implant mucositis. Like gingivitis, Peri-implant mucositis is inflammation and irritation of the gum tissue around dental implants. Patients might notice bleeding and tenderness of the gums around their implant. This condition can be easily treated with various oral hygiene techniques, both at home and in-office. At all of your recall appointments our dental hygienists will check your implants to ensure they are healthy.
Peri-Implantitis
Peri-implantitis is a more severe form of disease that results in bone loss around an implant. This condition, if left untreated, can result in infections around your implant, bone loss, and even complete loss of your implant. Depending on the severity of bone loss, various bone graft procedures could be completed to try and regrow the bone that has been lost. This can be an extremely unpredictable procedure and early intervention is always key to trying to return the implant to a state of health. Unfortunately, not all implants are able to be saved and implant removal might be necessary. At the time of your consultation for Peri-implantitis, a 3D scan will be taken to ensure that complete treatment planning can be performed. We will work with you to find the treatment option that is best for you.
